Course Details

Beginners - Open Strings to Grade 2+

Date: Wednesday 26 August 2025

Time: 11am-5pm

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to beginner string players approximately age 5-12 (violin, viola, cello and double bass) who have been playing for at least one term up to those working around Grade 2 level.

If you are playing at Grade 3 level and above, jump to the Intermediate section.

Please note: grades are given as a guide - no exams need to have been taken.

What will we be doing?

During the day, we will be playing together as a group. We’ll also be enjoying some singing, developing our musicianship and getting creative with our instruments.

Who will be teaching us?

How much does it cost?

The cost for the workshop is £60.This can be paid in full or in instalments and a £30 deposit is non-refundable.

Intermediate - Grade 3-6+

Dates: Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August 2026

Time: 10am-5pm both days

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to intermediate level string players age 7-18 (violin, viola, cello and double bass) who are working between Grade 3 and Grade 6/pre-Grade 7 level.

If you are working at or beyond Grade 7 level, please jump to the Advanced workshop.

Please note: grades are given as a guide and no exams need to have been taken.

What will we be doing?

During the workshop, we will be playing in both small chamber groups and joining together as a string orchestra. We’ll also be spending time in our individual instrument groups learning more about technique, developing our musicianship and performance skills and getting creative with our instruments.

Who will be teaching us?

The course will be delivered by Guest Tutors including violinists Hilary Sturt, Clare Thompson, violist Clifton Harrison, cellists Ian Pressland and Rosie Spins and double bassist Jo Bradley.

Advanced - Grade 7 to Diploma Level

Dates: Thursday 27 and Friday 28 August 2025

Time: 10am-5pm both days

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to advanced level string players up to age 21 (violin, viola, cello and double bass) who are working from Grade 7 to post-Diploma level. Please note: grades are given as a guide and no exams need to have been taken.

What will we be doing?

During the workshop, we will be playing in both small chamber groups and coming together as a string orchestra. We’ll also be spending time in our instrument groups developing our technique and performance skills and focusing on developing your understanding of what it means to be a healthy musician.

There will also be the opportunity for some musicians to receive a 1:1 or small group lesson (up to 4 players) with one of our guest Tutors. You can add your expression of interest this on the registration form.

Pastoral Care

During the workshop, the young people will be looked after when they are not in rehearsals by a pastoral team who are DBS checked. A first aider will also be on site each day.

How to Find Us!

Grantham Prep School is conveniently located just a short walk or car journey from Grantham Train Station. Grantham is on the LNER East Coast Mainline, with good links to London, Leeds, Nottingham and York. By car, Grantham Prep School is just off the A1.
